Transformation and Revelation in Escalante
Although no one person was the idolized hero on my trip, I was able to find my own role as a hero. Our leader assigned me to the role of an ant. It was early in the morning and i was laying down in the sand under the gigantic rock alcove that hung above my head. I was sipping scolding hot, watered down hot chocolate when our trip leader, Brian, sat down next to me fanning out a solid forty cards for my to choose from. I quickly grabbed the one in the middle. I flipped it over only to find a tiny black ant on the other side. Initially, I wasn't thrilled but after Brian told me the traits of the ant my whole attitude changed, and so did my view on the journey ahead of me. An ant is patient, honest, and trustworthy. I kept all of these in mind as I trekked through the Escalante river, surrounded by 300 foot stone walls on either side of me, hiding me from the flat desert above. As an ant, I didn't stand out. I tried my best to not get frustrated and lead by example. I wasn't a stand out hero, but I changed the personality of the group, and myself, all thanks to the ant.
